Read Across America

Good morning Members of the Rotary Club of  Niwot,
As I have shared the past few weeks, the Read Across America initiative is fast approaching In March.  This effort is generally celebrated on the anniversary of Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel) which is March 2, a Saturday this year.  For this reason, I have communicated with Niwot Elementary Principal, Nancy Pitz about Read Across America for 2019.

Ms. Pitz has responded that she would like to celebrate Read Across America on Tuesday, March 5th this year, if our Club members would like to partner with the school.  I did bring this question forward February 21st, at our weekly meeting, and I understood that the Tuesday, March 5th date was generally acceptable to our Club members.

So, I am asking a minimum of 5-7 RCN members (5 minimum) join in as partners to celebrate reading........the joy and benefits of this important communication skill.  Please reference the email sent last week for instructions on how to sign up.  Time slots are as follows:
9:15-9:40 - (5) readers needed
9:45-10:10 - (5) readers needed
10:15-10:40 - (5) readers needed
10:45-11:10 - (5) readers needed
(These 5 readers could be the same people, or different for each period, but we need minimum 5 readers during each period.  It'd be best if you could stay the entire time, but more hands make the work light.)  To date, Marty, Pat, Chris, and Deb have signed up.  If possible, I would like to have 1-2 more readers to cover all of the 20 time slots at the school.  There's still time to Sign Up.

Rotary members, will you please check your calendars and send me back an email, only if you can confirm that you can attend and support this Rotary Project this year.  Again, I am hoping to have 5-7 members who can visit classrooms and read one or two Dr. Seuss selections as listed on the above time schedule.  Thank you.

February Student of the Month

Our club's Student of the Month for February is Aiden Peairs.  Aidan has pushed himself academically throughout his high school career by taking upper-level courses here at N.H.S.  Through his hard work and perseverance, he has been able to attain a 4.438 Grade Point Average. Aidan’s commitment to academic excellence, to volunteerism, and to involvement in school activities resulted in his acceptance into the National Honor Society. Aidan has excelled in the classroom, and he has also demonstrated many personality traits that have exemplified his selflessness and commitment to success, both his own and that of others.  He has volunteered his time through the Boys Scouts of America, Crayons 2 Calculators, the Sunrise Stampede and the Longmont Student Chamber Network. Aidan has served on our school district’s Student Senate and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.  He has been on the varsity Cross Country team, the Economics Club, Key Club, Chess Club, Art Exploration Club, and the Comedy Club.

We congratulate Aiden on his many accomplishments and wish him well in the future.

District Conference Coming!

A reminder to attend--if at all possible, the District Celebration on Saturday April 27th at the Arvada Center.  As Scott mentioned this morning, the celebration is an excellent way to recharge sagging Rotary batteries, get to meet other Rotarians, see what clubs and the district are doing locally and world wide, and to just enjoy some great company and awesome speakers.  The cost is $125 for the day, including meals; you can also elect to attend only a half day--either morning or afternoon--for $75.  there will also be a social gathering the evening before at the Center--pure fun and camaraderie.  Partners/spouses are also welcome to attend.  Please see the District's website (rotary5450.org) for further details and to register.

Wine about Winter in Niwot

WINE ABOUT WINTER IN NIWOT 2019 was very well attended by both community residents and Rotarians alike.  Although we didn't sell tickets, there was much interest in our Wine Cheese & Chocolate fundraiser.  At the very least, our Rotary club was present and seen by hundreds of community residents.  Club members answered many questions related to "Who Is Rotary" and "What Do We Do".  This event provided the perfect opportunity to let people know who we are and what we're about.  Thank you to all who volunteered at our table!

Wine, Cheese, & Chocolate Update

Live Auction Items Needed . . .We now have printed material you can use to tell others about our major fundraising event of the year!  See Chris, Ron, or Doug for fliers, cards, and instructions on how to sell tickets online.

We want to make the best use of our auction software (making registration, bidding, and checkout smoother and faster).  Selling tickets online will help achieve that goal.  Please focus on selling electronic tickets whenever possible.  (See Chris for paper tickets if needed.)  Go to our event website to sell/buy tickets.

We'll offer early-bird discounted tickets until the end of March for $45 each.  After which, single tickets will be $50, purchases of 2-9 tickets will be $45 each, and 10 or more tickets will be $40 each.

We need volunteers to begin gathering donated gift cards.  Visit those stores you normally frequent and tell them about our event.  Ask for donated gift cards and coupons.  These can bring in extra cash in our live auction!  Contact Chris if you're able to help.

Our goals for the event are very attainable if we all pitch in!
